Orbiter Receives First Place Designation

Streetsboro High School's Orbiter student newspaper received first place designation in the “small school” overall newspaper category in the Ohio Scholastic Media Association’s contest and conference held April 4 and 5  at Kent State University.

This award came just months after the school’s 2013 yearbook was rated second place by OSMA and first place in the school’s first-ever entry into the National Scholastic Press Association’s national yearbook competition.

In three issues of the newspaper critiqued and rated by an out-of-state journalism professional prior to the conference, noted strengths included photography, coverage, writing/editing, design and editorial leadership.

HS Students Conference with LA Director/Producer

On Monday evening, April 7th, members of Streetsboro Theatre conducted a videoconference with L.A. directed/producer, Erin Brown, who directed the original music video, Alice, for the group’s Fall Extravaganza, “Welcome to Wonderland.” Those present included junior, Emily Fernandez; senior, Jake Edgerton; junior, Cassidy Emch; junior, Alex Hahn; freshman, Kenny Guzy; director, Jim Boardwine; assistant director, Anthony Madden and technology integration specialist, Maureen Haska. Brown offered advice about Streetsboro Theatre’s upcoming fundraiser, which will be a campaign on Kickstarter. Our school’s program will begin raising funds mid-April for an upcoming feature film project. The movie they plan to produce is a modern spin on Alice in Wonderland. Alice, who has recently left the UK and moved to America with her mother and younger sister, struggles to differentiate between reality and fantasy as she copes with her parents’ turbulent divorce. In this original, coming-of-age story, the characters of Wonderland help Alice reach the realization that escapism is not the answer to dealing with grief and confusion. Streetsboro Theatre is excited to team once again with Brown and other professionals to create a spectacular piece of entertainment.

Streetsboro Teachers Present at OETC 2014

On Monday, January 27th, Courtney Ruggaber (High School) and Brittany Kidd (High School) presented “Blended Learning and Web 2.0 Tools for Foreign Language and Beyond!” at the Ohio Educational Technology Conference in Columbus, Ohio.  The session introduced the audience to a variety of resources to be used for Project Based Learning, that focus on 21st century skills, and that allow for student choice as an assessment.  Examples included Prezi, Voki, Glogster, Piktochart, Zazzle, WeVideo, BitStrips, Quizlet, Study Blue, and  Google Apps for Education. The teachers shared student created examples, teacher created examples, and examples available for free on the web.  The presentation also focused on increasing accessibility to classroom resources outside of the school day via course websites and WikiSpaces. Teachers were given a handout of key materials with links to additional resources.  Both teachers have been working with the District’s Blended Learning team for the past two years.

Streetsboro Teachers Present at OETC 14

On Wednesday, January 29th, Dan Stitzel (Middle School) and John Oleksa (Defer Intermediate) presented “Streamline your Middle Level Classroom with Blended Learning and Edmodo” at the Ohio Educational Technology Conference in Columbus, Ohio. In the presentation, teachers were introduced to Edmodo and had the opportunity to see how it could be used as an organizational and time management tool.  Teachers were shown how to set up a classroom for blended learning, how to post assignments on Edmodo and make them available to both students and parents, how to create quizzes on Edmodo and collect student data with the results, and how to increase parent communication. Both teachers are part of the District’s Blended Learning team.
